Porsche Motorsport has revealed that the brand new LMP1 race car, which will be used in the 2014 World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, is officially called the 919 Hybrid.
The German manufacturer says that the new name “follows on from the tradition of the 917, but it is also with a view” to the recently unveiled 918 Spyder, and “acknowledges the company’s embarkation into the hybrid future.”

“With hybrid sports cars like the Cayenne as a SUV, the Grand Touring Panamera, and the 918 Spyder three-litre super sportscar, we are on the right track. But to continue leading the way in the future and to merge sportiness with sustainability, we need to keep learning. Maximum efficiency in energy consumption is the directive of the new WEC regulations for the works-entered class 1 prototypes – and that is also the direction for the automobile future,” said Wolfgang Hatz, board member for R&D at Porsche AG.

Additionally, the Germans confirmed that Brendon Hartley and Marc Lieb have been assigned as regular drivers of the LMP1 race car, joining Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas, Neel Janni and Mark Webber.

As a reminder, the Porsche 919 Hybrid is powered by a four-cylinder engine and two energy recuperation systems that deliver additional power.
