One of the most promising alternative fuels in the maritime industry, the Neste Marine 0.1, is making its debut in Sweden. The names behind it are Neste, which also happens to be the world's largest SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) producer, and ScanOcean, an energy and distribution company with a focus on delivering marine fuels.
Although maritime transportation is unanimously considered as difficult to decarbonize as aviation, we've seen a remarkable variety of potential solutions tested in this sector over the years. The methods of lowering emission levels associated with shipping range from different types of alternative fuels (LNG, ammonia) to hybrid or electric propulsion systems.

Last year, Neste introduced Neste Marine 0.1 Co-Processed, a marine fuel with a bold claim. This fuel was able to reduce GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions by 80% throughout its lifecycle compared to standard fuels used in shipping. At the time of its global debut, the Neste Marine 0.1 was already ISO 8217-compliant and certified with ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification).

It's also a drop-in fuel, which means it can easily substitute conventional fuels without the need for any modifications to the vessels. This is similar to SAF, which is also meant to work as a drop-in fuel without any changes to current aircraft and engines.

Neste obtains this green alternative fuel by mixing fossil raw materials with renewable raw materials during the refining process (hence the "Co-Processed” in the fuel's official name). Through this process, the new fuel can provide a composition that's similar to that of standard fuels and the same performance but with significantly fewer emissions across its lifecycle (up to 80%).

The Finnish company launched its game-changing maritime fuel in Finland in partnership with Nordic Marine Oil. A year later, it's expanding to the Swedish market with the help of ScanOcean.

Starting this week, ScanOcean will deliver the precious co-processed fuel to ports on the Swedish east coast. It will also supply it at the Sodertalje ex-pipe facility for ships transiting to Lake Malaren.

Containers, tankers, cargo ships, and even passenger ships can benefit from this breakthrough fuel, confirming Neste Marine's huge potential to revolutionize shipping.

At the same time, the Finnish oil company is doing great things for aviation. As the only one in the industry with refineries on three continents, and a growing production capacity, it claims to be the largest SAF producer worldwide.

It plans to reach a 2.2-million-ton capacity by early 2026, in line with the growing global demand. It's also set to turn its Porvoo oil refinery in Finland into Europe's most sustainable refinery by the end of this decade. Porvoo is where Neste produced some of its SAF and all of its co-processed maritime fuel.
