Genesis is celebrating its third anniversary since launching its models in China. Hyundai's premium car brand is present these days at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show with several vehicles, including the all-new G80 EV Magma Concept.
The 2024 Genesis G80 EV Magma Concept is the second electric vehicle in the Magma program. It is an electric version of the G80 Magma Concept shown earlier this year, with its V6 firepower that produces around 500 hp.
Instead of the orange hue, Genesis dressed its latest study in Acme Blue, which is said to be a China-specific color. It has a carbon fiber body kit similar to its ICE-powered sibling, rides on 21-inch alloys that reduce the sprung weight and improve brake cooling, and features additional aero optimizations.
For instance, the brand's signature crest grille has a closed-off design, as there is no internal combustion unit behind it that needs air. The ducktail spoiler is smaller, and there are no quad tailpipes anymore, as it is an electric vehicle. The rear diffuser has a motorsport-inspired brake light incorporated into it, and the roof boasts solar panels that slightly improve its range.
Inside, Genesis gave the new 2024 G80 EV Magma Concept a few sporty and premium touches. The show car features Alcantara upholstery, leather with a quilting pattern, and some carbon fiber trim with a blue-colored weave that ties the cockpit to the exterior.
According to the Korean car manufacturer, the new study features an "advanced suspension." It also gets ventilated front and rear brakes to keep the power in check, yet we do not know how much it puts under the driver's right foot, as the automaker didn’t go into specifics. Nevertheless, a dual-motor setup would easily dwarf the ICE-powered model's ~500 hp.
Is there more than meets the eye? Well, that would be a yes, as the brand's chief of Global Design, SangYup Lee, hinted at a possible production version. Thus, if everything goes as planned, the new G80 EV Magma Concept will morph into a production model that would take on the likes of the Tesla Model S. Mind you, it could be a China-only affair, meaning that it won't launch in Western markets like Europe and North America. Still, we hope it does, as it is an interesting proposal.
In addition to the latest electric show car, Genesis also unveiled an updated G80 Electrified. This ride sits under the spotlight at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show with its Vision Blue exterior finish, a 27-inch OLED display, and a 130 mm (5.1 in) longer wheelbase. Other Genesis cars that have graced the automotive event in China's capital city are the GV80 Coupe, GV60 Magma Concept, and X Gran Berlinetta Concept.
