New Ford Focus Production Begins

Only a few days are left before the first units of the new Ford Focus are shipped to the dealerships, after on Thursday the American manufacturer kicked off mass production of the model. In the US, the new Focus will be manufactured at the revamped Michigan Assembly Plant (MAP), one of 11 Ford facilities in the US taking part in the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program.

Ford readied the plant properly before starting production, having spent $550 million over the past few months to turn the facility into one of the greenest in the country. The plant will become known as the place where one of the largest solar power generation systems in the state is located.

“MAP epitomizes the best of what Ford stands for – fuel efficiency, quality, smart technology,” said Mark Fields, president of Ford The Americas. “Focus delivers even more of what customers truly want and value – and this new car could not arrive in the market at a better time.”

The new Focus promises to be a force to be reckoned with on today's market, at the core of the lineup being the new 2.0l gasoline direct-injection DOHC four-cylinder engine, more powerful than the 2.0l Duratec currently in use, but at the same time 10 percent more fuel efficient.

According to the EPA, the Focus equipped with this engine, SFE (Super Fuel Economy - 16-inch steel wheels with aero wheel covers, active grille shutters, high-efficiency tires, four-wheel disc brakes, rear spoiler ) package and a six-speed automatic transmission that is capable of achieving a fuel economy of 40 mpg (5.88l/100 km).
