Considering that Ford has the Ranger Raptor but doesn’t sell it over in the United States, Chevrolet is basking in the sun with the Colorado ZR2. The mid-size pickup with off-road chops is even better is you opt for the Bison package from American Expedition Vehicles, priced at $48,045 and available in extremely limited numbers.
U.S. dealers ordered 2,000 units of the ZR2 Bison for the 2019 model year, and American Expedition Vehicles is willing to change that. 31-inch tires for all-terrain driving, fender flares, skid plates, bumpers, you name it, AEV is much obliged to sell you these parts separately to Colorado customers who want more off-road capability.

As if that wasn’t enough, American Expedition Vehicles told Muscle Cars & Trucks that the Colorado ZR2 Bison Plus is right around the corner with no help whatsoever from General Motors. Two concepts with 35-inch tires and high-clearance fenders will premiere in November 2019 at the SEMA Show, previewing what’s next.

“We’re looking at doing something like a Bison Plus or whatever you want to call it,” said marketing manager Matt Feldermann. “The ZR2 Bison Tray Bed we showed at Overland Expo West had a set of our new high-clearance fender flares which allow for a 35-inch tire with no lift.”

Without a lift kit, American Expedition Vehicles would take full advantage of the research & development that went into the suspension geometry of the Colorado ZR2 and Colorado ZR2 Bison. For reference, the Ford F-150 Raptor uses BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 35-inch rubber.

In regard to suck-squeeze-bang-blow, customers will have to make do with either a naturally aspirated V6 or a four-cylinder turbo diesel. The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado with the 3.6-liter gasoline engine comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, 308 horsepower, and 275 pound-feet of torque thanks to direct fuel injection and variable valve timing.

Customers who’re looking for more torque lower down the rev range are treated to the 2.8-liter Duramax, which develops 369 pound-feet at 2,000 rpm. For some reason or another, the diesel-fueled option comes with a six-speed automatic in the day and age where the Ranger features ten forward ratios.
