Powerful Camaro Models Added To Hertz’s Rental Fleet

With either 480 or 750 horsepower on tap, these two Chevy Camaro models are exclusive to Hertz in the United States. A total of 224 examples of the breed – based on the 2020 model year – are offered with 6.2 liters of displacement, naturally aspirated or supercharged as well.

The Camaro SS-based pony features 25 more horsepower than stock thanks to a cold-air intake and cat-back exhaust system outfitted by Hendrick Motorsports. The black-and-yellow visual theme also brings the point home, and the Camaro ZL1-based car boasts a Callaway supercharging kit.

It’s a bit of a curiosity how Hertz came to the conclusion that 750 horsepower is an adequate output for a rental car, but we’ll skip over the debate for the time being. What’s most surprising, however, is that the badging and embroideries are far more subtle than the Dale Earnhardt Edition of the Monte Carlo from the early 2000s, an extremely tacky coupe through and through.

Are you prepared to go through the pricing for these rentals? The SS starts at $99 per day and anyone over 25 years is eligible to reserve this car. The downside to the company’s policy is that “market conditions” can affect pricing. Those in favor of the ZL1 need to shell out $299 per day without a security deposit, limited to 75 miles per day. Going over that mileage results in 75 cents for every mile, an overcharge that sounds quite reasonable to our ears.

Hertz’s new rentals will be available to reserve in October 2019 in 15 cities, starting with five airports (Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix, and Charlotte). For some reason or another, Hertz has also taken the decision to limit the availability of the cars for a fairly short time. But wait, there’s more!

Supporting the release of the 480- and 750-horsepower rentals, the rental company is launching the Hertz Ultimate Ride Sweepstakes. It will run through November 15th, and the winner will be awarded a 2020 Hertz-Hendrick Motorsports version of the Camaro SS. Five finalists will also be offered a driving experience in Charlotte with none other than William Byron.

In case you’re tempted by the SS and ZL1, make sure you opt for the available insurance because these cars are trouble. "Both vehicles provide a powerful and exhilarating driving experience that we can't wait to share with our customers,” said Jayesh Patel, senior vice president of Hertz.
