At first glance, it doesn't look that good for new the M3. Even though everybody knows the M3 mainly as a coupe, you can only buy it as a sedan now. It's also got a smaller engine with not a lot more power and looks like an average F30 sedan with different bumpers.
However, once you delve deeper into the numbers, this becomes the best sports sedan on the market right now. Why? Because people don't want to go sideways in a cloud of smoke every day, but when they do, the M3 is there for them. Also, the S55 3-liter engine is the only way to radically cut fuel consumption on a car like this. Power when you want it, economy the rest of the time – it's the best of both worlds.
Making its global debut today at the Detroit Auto Show, the M3 came along with its new brother, the M4. Bulging at the seems, both cars pack on plenty of body muscle without looking too menacing. Deep-dish ally wheels, quad exhaust pipes and huge brakes come along for the right. Even carbon fiber makes a guest appearance on the roof of the car, as a lightener and performance enhancer. What you can't see is all the engineering that's gone into making the suspension rigid and planted.
It's very easy to be cynical about this car and say it's not the best, but BMW knows what its doing. If the Germans say 431 PS is enough, then we'll have to trust them… we just wish they'd have put together a nicer interior.
