I'm sure you've noticed North America has been stepping up its off-grid and off-road living machines in the past few years. Well, one crew that's hitting this industry with everything they have is Off Grid Trailers. They're a Canadian team building all-metal units with a kick. Let's take the Expedition 3.0 as the perfect example of what I mean.
Folks, if the name Off Grid Trailers (OGT) sounds familiar, it's because we've covered their work on several occasions. However, recently, this crew has been spitting out upgraded versions of existing machines for the upcoming year. One such unit is Expedition 3.0, a machine meant to achieve exactly what its name would suggest: to be your go-to companion on, well, expeditions.

Now, if you're familiar with OGT units, I want you to throw all of that out of the window because the Expedition seems to be aimed heavily at utility. In short, it's like a sort of Swiss Army knife, but for those of us who not only use campers as a means of capturing peaceful moments but as a tool to feed adrenaline and even tend to the land.

Sure, the Expedition 3.0 is a camper, but then again, it's a tad more than just that. I want to attract your attention to two separate spaces on the unit, the rear and the front. Starting with the rear, I want you to check out the images in the gallery to understand what I'm talking about and then leave a comment as to what you'd do with so many storage options.

In short, the rear of the Expedition, where most campers of this type would have a galley system in place, is replaced by a large wall-to-wall storage system with eight bays and shelves. Take a moment and think about everything you could bring along on your camping adventures.

This space also leads me to imagine another setting where these babies could excel in the workplace. You wouldn't think it, but there are countless industries out there that require their workers to travel countless miles, sometimes even having to catch Zs in their trucks or cars overnight. With an Expedition 3.0, you'd be taking all the work out of carrying tools and utensils around, and overnight stays are sure to take on a different tone.

This leads me to the next section of the Expedition that I mentioned, the front. Because the rear of this camper is occupied by nothing more than storage space, the front of it is reserved for the all-important galley. To access it, you have to open up the nose storage box, pull the two slideouts, and get to cooking and relaxing with a cold one after a day of working the land or riding e-bikes through the woods.

Each Expedition is ready with a dual-burner stove, stainless steel sink with faucet, and 31 gals (141 l) of water-holding capacity. Since outdoor living is the goal, there's an on-demand hot water heater at your fingertips and a shower, too. Be sure to check out the other features we need for outdoor living, like a 1,000 W inverter, dual deep cycle batteries, and a Zamp solar port.

Now, once you've filled your belly with the food you love and need, you can take a little siesta inside the Expedition and see what sleeping in fresh outdoor air can achieve for tired bones and muscles. In each unit, OGT adds storage space for essentials, a monitor for your electrical setup, a mattress for two guests, and AC and heating. In short, grab a pillow and a blanket, and enjoy.

After you've woken up, refreshed, and rejuvenated, it's time to take on the evening duties or goals. If you're like me, you'll probably have a couple of e-bikes or kayaks mounted to the top of your Expedition. No worries; 1,000 lbs (454 kg) of cargo can be supported by the roof rack system. Take them down, open up the rear of the camper, grab the tools you need to make changes and modifications for the road ahead, and off you go. You'd better ride fast if you want to catch that sunset on some ridge.

The next day, it's time to move to the next X on your map, but there's a problem: it's been raining, and everything is muddy and full of the unknown. What are we to do? Well, absolutely nothing different than normal. Hitch up the camper to your 4x4 or truck, and off you go.

Don't worry; OGT ensures the Expedition series lives up to the standards this crew has grown to be known for. What I mean to say is that a standard Timbren 3500 HD suspension takes care of the terrain, and 21 in (53 cm) of ground clearance means the unknown stays that way. Come to think of it, OGT's motto, if they ever decide on one, should be "Just keep driving. Just keep driving." It's even possible to upgrade your suspension with 8 in (20 cm) of travel and 25 in (63.5 cm) of ground clearance. What more could we want?

Speaking of wanting, how much can we expect to drop on one of these buggers? Well, it depends on the sort of extras you end up vouching for, but, as standard, each Expedition is only asking for $34,750 (€33K at current exchange rates), which, considering it's an all-metal habitat, among others, is pretty dang good. What are you glamping out of next season? Feel free to leave a comment with the camper of your choice.
