If you live in the US and want to discourage thieves from stealing your car, make sure to always lock your door. Then, you should consider buying a car with manual transmission because, apparently, it serves as a powerful deterrent for carjackers young and old.
With statistics showing about 18 percent of Americans can drive stick, it’s no wonder 2 teens from Nashville fell in the other, much larger category. The bad news (for them) is that they didn’t take this into account when planning to turn carjackers.
According to a statement from the Nashville Police, the teens had 2 attempts at carjacking within an hour, approaching female drivers at 2 local parking lots. The first attempt saw them approach the female driver while she was still in her car and yelling at her to get out, so they could leave with the vehicle.
As they were attempting to yank her out of the car, she kept yelling and honking the horn. The teens realized they had little time left, so they used it to get away from the scene. On foot.
Some time later, they struck again, in a different parking lot. They saw another female driver heading towards a shop, so they approached her and took the keys out of her hand. They jumped in the car, thinking they were set for a ride.
They weren’t. The car had a manual transmission and they immediately realized they didn’t know how to drive stick. So they made their way on foot once more.
“A short time later, officers spotted both teens in the area and took them into custody. They were positively identified as the young men involved in both incidents. The teens are each charged in Juvenile Court with attempted robbery/carjacking, theft of property, and attempted theft of a vehicle,” the statement from the police notes.
Even for wannabe carjackers, this must have been an incredibly lousy and un-lucrative day.
