Hendrick Motorsports’ driver Jeff Gordon has reached an amazing 214 miles per hour (344 km/h) in his NASCAR prepped Chevrolet SS during tire testing in Indianapolis yesterday.
The incredible speed was achieved by the veteran driver thanks to a new set of environmentally friendly tires and the cool morning track temperatures. In fact, he wasn’t the only racer to go over 210 mph, as Joe Gibbs Racing’s Mark Martin reporting a 212 mph speed.
Such velocity is hardly imaginable during an actual race, where average speeds are usually in the 180 miles per hour range. During Tuesday’s tests, NASCAR teams tried various tire compounds to determine what performs best on the 2.5-mile long oval track.
The 2013 Crown Royal 400, which is hosted by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is scheduled on July 28. Until then, NASCAR will head over to the Talladega Superspeedway for Aaron’s 499 race.
