One Newcastle resident didn’t hesitate for a second when he heard the alarm on his car go off in the dead of night. He didn’t even stop to put on a pair of underpants or, for that matter, any other item of clothing.
Stephen Cullen, a roofer, proudly admits to The Sun: he is the “Naked Ninja,” the dude who stopped a thief from taking his car by running after him and tackling him in the nude. The moniker probably gives it all away.
It happened on what seemed to be a quiet night. Cullen and his girlfriend were in bed watching TV, when they heard the alarm on his car, a Range Rover, go off. Cullen had paid £10,000 for it, and he wasn’t about to let anyone have it for free.
He sprinted out of bed, thought twice about jumping out the window and took the stairs instead, ran through his front garden, opened the gate and got into the street. CCTV footage shows the thief, a drunk 17-year-old, panicking and getting out of the car through the passenger door, trying to make a run for it.
But the “Naked Ninja” is not a ninja for nothing: he ran after the wannabe thief and tackled him to the ground. Had this been a movie scene, it would have been hilarious as hell.
Cullen himself can’t help but laugh at it, in retrospect. “The guy realized I was naked. He didn’t know where to put his hands,” he tells the tabloid. While struggling to get away, the thief kept saying “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” perhaps thinking it would be enough to let him off the hook.
“I’m the Naked Ninja,” Cullen adds. “That car is my pride and joy, there is no way that anyone was stealing it.”
No word if Cullen handed the thief over to the police, but since he has video evidence of his deed, he should have. Saying he was sorry shouldn’t cover his attempted car theft.
