The Blue Oval has big plans for the future. No less than 16 fully electric vehicles will be released by Ford by 2022, following an $11 billion investment in the research and development of alternative powertrains. And on Thursday, the world got a glimpse and one of those vehicles, the Mustang-inspired SUV.
The teaser photo released by Ford shows what clearly is a Mustang back end transplanted to another, bigger car. And not just any car, but a “fully-electric performance utility,” as the carmaker calls it.
The information released earlier in the year poitns to the car likely to be called Mach 1. New details say its battery pack will be capable of storing enough electricity to give it a range of 300 miles (482 kilometers). It will be released less than two years from now, in 2020.
What we see in the photo released by Ford is the first tangible result of the work conducted by Team Edison, a group of people within the company that got together last year to put the Blue Oval on the electric vehicle market map.
The group started working in a new headquarters in Corktown, where the team working on Ford’s autonomous vehicles is also located.
The conjugated efforts of the two groups would lead to the launch of a purpose-built, custom-designed self-driving vehicle that runs on a hybrid-electric powertrain.
“We’re a dedicated team who has been lucky enough to be chosen to pilot the future of Ford from an old factory in the heart of Corktown, Detroit’s oldest neighborhood,” said in a blog post accompanying the teaser Darren Palmer Global Product Development Director for Team Edison.
“Electric vehicle customers are buying into the future and our team is 100 percent focused on not only delivering vehicles they will love but providing an entire electric vehicle ecosystem that works flawlessly.”
