Remember when Ford confirmed that Team Edison is working on an electric SUV? Scheduled to arrive no later than 2020, the newcomer will blend Mustang exterior design with the versatility of a utility vehicle, but won’t be called Mach 1.
The Ford Motor Company tested the water with this Mustang-inspired nameplate, but the public didn’t like it at all. When all is said and done, it’s sacrilege to apply this nameplate to a vehicle that hasn’t got anything in common with America’s original pony car.

“Hey, didn’t Chevrolet do something similar with the Camaro-styled Blazer?” The golden bowtie did exactly that, but as opposed to Ford, General Motors didn't dare to borrow a nameplate from the Camaro's illustrious history. Given these circumstances, you could say that Chevrolet did a better job as far as branding is concerned.

Based on the wheelbase and volume of the prototype, the Anything-But-Mach-1 appears to walk the thin line between the compact and mid-size crossover segments. The platform comes in the guise of the C2 vehicle architecture, used for the first time in the all-new Focus.

Despite the “Diesel Fuel Only” sticker, this fellow here is equipped with Michelin Primacy A/S rubber. You know, economy-minded tires that work best on an electric vehicle. Then there are the fake exhaust tip, oversized diffuser panel that hides the rear axle-mounted electric motor, and battery tray. Oh, and would you look at the design of the braking system!

Even though we don’t know if the Mach 1 will be front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive, one thing is certain. The next-generation electric drivetrain will allow the electric crossover to travel 300 miles on a full charge, which would trump the Model X 100D at its own game.

Tesla offers up to 295 miles in this configuration, though Ford has a couple of other competitors in its sight. Off the top of my head, two of those rivals are the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron SUV. The e-tron is expected to be EPA-rated at close to 300 miles, whereas the I-Pace can’t do better than 240 miles.
