The most recent shootings in two U.S. states have brought the levels of fear Americans and foreigners alike are experiencing across the country to new levels. Proof of this is an incident which took place on Tuesday (August 6) in New York.
The ever-busy Times Square erupted in a panic last night after loud noises that appeared to be gunshots were heard in the area.

A yet undetermined number of people started fleeing in all directions, while others hugged the tarmac in an attempt to escape what they believed to be an active shooter situation.

According to CNN affiliate WLNY, the incident took place near 7th Avenue and 46th Street at 10 p.m. local time, and was caused by backfiring motorcycle engines.

As the panic ensued, the 911 hotline was flooded with calls reporting an active shooter. The local police (NYPD Midtown North) investigated and quickly released a statement saying the Times Square is safe and there is no need for panic.

“There is no #ActiveShooter in #TimesSquare. Motorcycles backfiring while passing through sounded like gunshots. We are receiving multiple 911 calls. Please don’t panic. The Times Square area is very safe!” the NYPD wrote.

The police did not say how many motorcycles were involved, or whether there was intent in causing the mayhem.

No one was seriously injured, but several people were left with bruises and lacerations.

The incident occurred shortly after two deadly attacks in Texas and Ohio. The first mass shooting took place at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, when 21- year-old Patrick Crusius gunned down 46 people, killing 22 of them.

A few hours later, Dayton Ohio became the center of attention as 24-year-old Connor Betts shot 16 people, killing 9.

Since the beginning of the year, there were around 250 mass shootings in the U.S. and 273 people have been killed, according to the Gun Violence Archive. These two are the deadliest this year.
