In the early months of 2018, British car builder Morgan announced the end of the Aero 8 and Plus 8 era. With the breed, Morgan will also ditch the use of V8 engines in its cars, for reasons not yet fully explained.
The final two cars in the 8 series are currently being tested by the company’s chief test driver, Keith Dalley, around the Malvern Hills in England, getting ready to enter Morgan’s heritage fleet of vehicles. This event takes place after 300 Plus 8 cars equipped with the BMW N62 engine were built over the years.
What will replace the cars in the Morgan lineup? Nothing really. Sure, a new car is coming, but it will not be a direct replacement for the 8 range, but rather a new addition to the lineup, the manufacturer claims.
Sometime next year an all-new Morgan, for now referred to only as Wide Body, will hit the roads as the company’s flagship model.
Not much is known about the car, apart from the fact that it will be built with a “bonded aluminum fabricated’ chassis that is said to be twice as stiff as the ones used on previous flagship Morgan cars.
Officially, the car will slot above the Roadster, Plus 4 and 4/4 in terms of performance, but the company is at this time very tight-lipped when it comes to why this is so.
What we are promised, however, is the “most dynamically capable production Morgan ever,” in part thanks to a powertrain never before used in a Morgan.
“The 2019 launch of this car is the culmination of several years of unprecedented investment in Design and Engineering for Morgan,” said in a statement Graham Chapman, Morgan technology director.
“This has produced the most advanced development programme in Morgan’s history, the results of which we cannot wait to share with our customers worldwide.”
Short glimpses of the Wide Body can be seen at the end of the four-minutes long video attached below.
