The president of Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo, is well aware of the fact that their F1 team’s failure to win this year’s title is basically all down to their bad season start, which ultimately compromised anything they tried to do later on in the season.
They struggled through the first five GPs,despite Alonso’s win in Malaysia, and even with the Spaniard’s consistency and determination being plainly obvious, it was too little, too late to try to overcome the odds and beat Red Bull (and Vettel, who just snatched the championship title in the last race of the season).

So, di Montezemolo is now keen to not make the same mistakes in 2013. He was quoted by autosport.com as saying: "What happened this year stems from what happened the previous year [. . .] On this topic, I will be asking for an in-depth analysis and an improvement in the organisation and work methods, because next year, we want to have a winning car right from the first race, which has not been the case these last two years [. . .] Certainly not winning the title is the cause for great sorrow and great regret, because we always want to win and we came close."

And yet, he does appreciate the effort displayed by his team, a feeling which became obvious when he said that he is “proud of the work done by the team in having produced the most reliable car, for never having got the strategy wrong and for making no mistakes at the pitstops. Right to the end, the team did its duty.” Their hopes for next season now all lie with Fernando Alonso, and if the Spaniard keeps up his good form, and Ferrari’s car stays as reliable as it has proven itself to be, then Vettel may very well not win a fourth title for Red Bull.
