Jenson Button may have won the Brazilian F1 Grand Prix for McLaren, but it was Sebastian Vettel who was the real winner, as his sixth-place finish granted him this third world championship, thus making him the youngest driver triple-world champion in F1 history.
In second place, Fernando Alonso crossed the line just under three seconds after Button, and he was followed by his team mate, Felipe Masa, who managed a podium on his home turf, to please the fans. In fourth place, Mark Webber was followed by Nico Hulkenberg, now-world champion, Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher, Jean-Eric Vergne, Kamui Kobayashi and Kimi Raikkonen.
The race itself was run in a variety of conditions, ranging from dry, to damp and even wet at some point, and on specific ares of the Sao Paulo track. It was a drama-packed Grand Prix, with Vettel being forced to pit after the first lap, following a incident with another driver - he re-entered the race at the rear of the pack.
Vettel was again faced with problems, when pitted early to swap his dry tires for wet ones, as the weather took a turn for the worst and it began to rain. However, he did manage to climb to sixth place, which he maintained until the end of the race. This was enough to grant him the title, as Alonso’s second-place finish was not sufficient to cause Vettel any sort of concern.
In the end, there were only three points in it, between Vettel and Alonso, with the latter being quoted as saying: "There's been situations during the season that make you think of these three points, but that's the sport. Even though I finished second in the points, I have never had such respect and affection from everybody in the paddock [. . .] This is the first time that I have got drivers, ex-drivers, teams, fans to say that we have done the best championship. We'll be back as strong in 2013, because it would be harder to be stronger. I have a great feeling after 2012, by far the best year of my career."
