You know what they say, strong essences are kept in small bottles. Or, in this particular case, in apparently-tiny teardrop trailers from Mobi Nomad.
This year, Mobi Nomad is introducing its 2018 design the Mobi X to adventure-seekers in Australia and, with some good luck, those in the U.S. and other territories will get it at a later time. Mobi X is the little camper that could, the trailer camper wearing several hats at once and itching to be taken off-road.
It’s a teardrop mono-hull trailer that expands to the size of a mobile home – and it is surprisingly able to offer all the comforts of one, as well. Despite its tiny size, Mobi X includes a fully-stocked kitchen, a shower with toilet, and sleeping space for up to six people, which would make it ideal for a family with kids looking for a sense of adventure over the weekend.
Mobi X is 12 feet (3.7 meters) long but, once deployed, it offers enough space to hold a dinner party. This is thanks to very well compartmentalized space: imagine one of those Russian doll sets, but set inside a white, fiberglass, steel-reinforced mono-hull rolling on a steel chassis. Being so compact, it can be towed by a 4x4 with ease. Rolling on 16-in (15.2-cm) Hankook all-terrain tires and a certain ruggedness to it makes it a solid alternative for a short outing in the outback.
Once at the destination, the Mobi X transforms itself. It pop up, drops down, slides out and swings around to create full accommodation. Since we can’t speak of proper accommodation without a bathroom, this trailer has it: there’s a dedicated bathroom area with an exterior shower and a Sanipotti toilet.
The kitchen and cooking areas are both on the exterior. There’s a generous and fully-stocked pantry on the inside (even cutlery comes as part of the standard package), a fridge, dual-burner and cooking space, and a simple but functional basin sink with drying rack. The 270-degree wraparound awning creates and limits the outdoor kitchen space.
With the kitchen deployed, the 2-person sleeping area inside has been freed. There’s a bed and some storage space, lights and electrical systems control, and inside access to the fridge. The large lateral window is the only entertainment you get, but hey, you’re probably too tired from all that trekking to want to watch TV in the first place. You can always find some consolation in knowing your cold beer is within easy reach, at the very least.
The pop-up tent on the roof is accessible through a side ladder and offers sleeping space for two more people. Two more people can catch some shut-eye on the ground, with another tent extension. This one isn’t part of the standard package but comes as an extra option, so larger families will want to take that into account.
Since we’re on the topic of the standard package, it also includes a 15 amp ACDC charger, 2.7 bar water pressure system, 150-liter (40-gallon) water tank, water heater, 7 LED lights, and the heavy duty roof rack with permanent ladder. Extra options include the pop-up tent for the roof and the exterior one, a larger fridge / freezer combo, and solar panels, which would allow you to run the lights and appliances on solar energy.
As noted above, Mobi Nomad introduced Mobi X in South Africa as the Mobi Nomad’s smaller sibling a couple of years ago, but it’s just now expanding availability for it. In Australia, this teardrop trailer camper sells at a AU$29,000 (US$20,923) starting price.
