The Audi TT has to be one of the least inspiring sports coupes on the market, but strangely it's also one of the most successful. Mazda RX-8, BMW Z3 and Honda S2000 – these are just some of retired pensioners out there who were at one point or another contemporary with the TT.
So how come Audi can thrive, selling over 500,000 of these boring cars while much more interesting cars are killed off. Has the TT got a rotary engine, or an inline-six engine? No, it's only got painfully boring attention to detail.
These are just the latest in a long line of spyshots showing the brand new third-generation TT coupe which will debut two months from now in Geneva. There's absolutely nothing new or interesting about the photos, but it just goes to show the difference between German automakers and French ones for example. When Peugeot launched the RCZ, the car was tested for a few months in sunny Spain, but the TT prototypes probably clocked over 100,000km, most of them in really difficult conditions.
But what can we expect from the new TT in terms of performance. Well, the car is basically identical to the A3 and S3 in terms of powertrains. Even with a 1.8-liter turbo, it's going to be pretty fast, but the new TTS powered by a 300 hp 2.0 TFSI will probably go 0 to 62mph in 4.8 seconds, almost matching the current TT RS for pace.
