The Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback has yet to go on sale in the United States, but the Japanese automaker is already thinking about the possibility of adding the sedan version to its American lineup. Priced below $14,000, the 2014 Mirage hatchback is powered by a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and claims to return 40 miles per gallon.
The Japanese automaker says the Mirage hatchback was well received by dealers and hopes the compact will at least 600 examples per month. Hardly a sale success when compared to other vehicles, that figure, and the fact that dealers have already placed 6,600 pre-orders, could trigger Mitsubishi to introduce the sedan version in the US as well.
However, since the puny 1.2-liter unit won’t be able to provide enough power for the heavier sedan, the company is looking at larger engines or even a turbocharged version of the current powerplant.
The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage can be had in two trim levels, DE and SE, both available with either five-speed manual or CVT transmissions. Pricing starts at $12,995, but the range-topping version, the ES CVT with Navi Package, can fetch up to $16,095.
