Mitsubishi i Commercial: New Normal

How many times have you hear the words "X automaker presents their vision of the future"? Usually, all that implies is that they’ve released some sort of strange concept with three wheels, four electric motors and the shape of an egg. But the Mitsubishi i has been know for some time to European and Japanese customers, so that just wouldn’t cut it.
Instead, the automaker is presenting their vision of the future in the form of a package that’s the new “normal”.

“New Normal” is the name of their fresh marketing campaign launched in the the States, where the Japanese automaker plans to drop a full thousand (yes, that one thousand or 1,000) i electric vehicles. Besides the all-electric cars, there will also be 30 quick-charge systems spread across the town of Noral.

"Normal EVTown is a community that is embracing new technology in an environmentally sound way," s
ays Chris Koos, Mayor of Normal, Illinois. "It is a way of imagining the future and Normal is that future."

It all sound very interesting, but we don’t think they are actually giving away any cars here, so you shouldn’t consider moving to Illinois quite yet. Instead, the EVs will be prioritized, so the town’s people will be prioritized when taking delivery.

The i costs $20,490 when you deduct the $7,500 in federal tax credit. It’s powered by a 66 horsepower synchronous electric motor, a 330V lithium-ion battery pack that can store up to 16 kWh and a single fixed reduction gear transmission. The top speed is 80 mph, not that it’s legal to do that around town.

The fact of the matter is that if they manage to put 1,000 cars on the streets of Normal, it will be the mecca of EV across the world, and we’ll be able to see what Mitsubishi’s vision of the future looks like.
