MINI has announced a massive global recall covering 235,000 cars, which is actually more than their annual production right now, due to a potential fire risk caused by faulty electric water pumps. This covers Cooper S and JCW models, basically the turbos, of different modes built between March 2006 and January 2011.
MINI’s investigations proved that heat buildup in the water pump could potentially result in a smoldering spark. And there have been four fire incidents occurring globally due to the problem.
"We are not aware of any accidents or injuries connected with this. The important thing is that when people receive the [recall] letter, they simply go to their dealer and get a new water pump fitted if there is a problem," a company spokesperson says.
MINI says that it will notify owners off affected cars and the faulty parts will be replaced free of charge. The global recall should begin in about a month’s time.
