With rumors of a new BMW plant opening in Mexico, aiming to build small BMW and MINI cars across the Atlantic Ocean, the world is getting rather impatient, waiting to see exactly what it’s going to happen.
If we were betting men, we’d say that the rumors are true and that the German group will be investing heavily into Mexico in the following months, to build a new factory. The only unknown remains what cars they are going to build over there.
Recent info seems to be pointing at MINIs and other small Bimmers that are using the UKL platform. From certain points of view, such a move does make sense but it’s still too early to make any strong statements at the moment.
Sure, costs would go down, especially for deliveries on American soil and making all UKL cars in one location would mean less changes would be done to other factories around the world but we still have to wait for an official answer.
Even so, various artists around the world already started thinking about what kind of cars could MINI build on Mexican soil. It’s no secret that Mexicans seem to have a certain affinity for El Camino-styled cars but a British car shaped like that? Could it be possible?
If we’re to ask Theophilus Chin, it certainly is. He already designed such a car that he, politely, calls “Mini Coupe Utility Concept”. We’ll call it the “MINI El Camino”.
Carrying over the styling cues of the new models, like the entire front fascia and big taillights, the El Camino is certainly different due to its flatbed and 2-seat cabin.
Come to think of it, it does remind us of the MINI Paceman Adventure project that is actually real but only a concept at the moment. Could Theophilus be on to something here? We think not but dreaming always made us want more and we wouldn’t say no to such a MINI.
