German automaker Mercedes-Benz has announced the introduction of a newly developed nine-speed automatic transmission on the E350 BlueTec model.
Available with a seven-speed 7G-Tronic gearbox up until now, the E350 BlueTec version of the recently facelifted E-Class gained the company’s new 9G-Tronic nine-speed transmission as standard.
While the new automatic makes no impact on the car’s performance, with 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) stuck at the 6.6-second mark, the two additional ratios coupled with the stop/start system have improved fuel economy from 51.4 mpg UK (5.5 liters/100 km / 42.8 mpg US) to 53.3 mpg UK (5.3 liters/100 km / 44.3 mpg US) in the combined cycle. The new powertrain will also emit less CO2, which is down from 144 g/km to 138 g/km.
Other changes made to the E-Class lineup include the removal of the standard six-speed manual gearbox for the E220 BlueEfficiency Edition, now replaced by the 7G-Tronic automatic, and the introduction of a new E200 NGD natural-gas model. The latter provides 154 BHP and claims to have a combine cycle economy of 4.3 kg / 62 miles (100 km) which means about 44.8 mpg UK (6.3 liters/100 km / 37.3 mpg US).
