Mercedes Confirm Long-Term Collaboration with McLaren

Amid recent reports that Mercedes are interested in strengthening their partnership with Brawn GP via a stake buyout in the near future, the German car maker today expressed its standpoint regarding all this speculations. A spokesman for Mercedes-Benz today confirmed that McLaren – of which Mercedes currently owns 40% – will continue to be the German marque's works team in the Formula One Championship.

Both McLaren and Mercedes-Benz remain extremely satisfied with our F1 collaboration, which has netted two drivers' world championships and one constructors' world championship as well as dozens of grand prix victories,” said the spokesman, according to a report from British broadcaster BBC.

Mercedes-Benz's engine supply contract with McLaren is a very long-standing one - it's in its 15th consecutive year, in fact - and it will continue to run for many years to come,” added the spokesman.

While confirming Mercedes' strong bond with the silver arrows, the spokesman did not mention anything about a potential multi-year contract with Brawn GP. The Brackley based team has initially agreed to a one-year contract with the German car maker for an engine supply before the 2009 season, but are reportedly interested in extending that deal for some additional years.

Considering Brawn's high success in the 2009 campaign – 7 wins so far – the Stuttgart based marque would very much like to extend that deal also. As for the 4th engine deal still available for the 2010 season – as limited by the FIA rule book – Mercedes seems to have two contenders: Red Bull Racing and Williams F1.

Red Bull's deal with Renault runs out at the end of the year and team principal Christian Horner made no secret from the fact that he is looking at every option for 2010. As for Sir Frank Williams, he was recently seen in the Mercedes garage (as a guest of honor) during the DTM round at Brands Hatch.
