It’s getting really heated up in the luxury sales war three German companies are fighting right now. Yes, we’re talking about the Cold War BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are all involved in. In the US, the blue and white roundel company is losing ground but the Chinese market seems to be compensating for now.
However, one has to wonder how long will the Bavarians manage to keep up and stay ahead of Mercedes-Benz like they have done for the last few years.

By the numbers

In September, the best selling automaker in the trio was, once again BMW, with a grand total of 167,584 units, a growth of 6.1 percent compared to the same month of last year.

In second place came Mercedes-Benz that managed to pass Audi in the global rankings for the first time since 2011 and sold 162,746 vehicles, recording its best-ever sales month in 88 years. That also translates into a 14 percent gain.

Audi, on the other hand, posted a sales increase of just 6 percent, adding up to a grand total of 159,950 cars and SUVs sold in September. Ultimately, the difference between BMW and Mercedes-Benz in September stands at just 4,838 cars.

Year-to-date

On a year-to-date basis, so far, Audi sold 1,298,650 cars, while the Stuttgart-based rival is 103,494 units behind with 1,195,156 vehicles sold. At the same time, BMW is now leading with a grand total of 1,529,880 cars delivered in the first 9 months of the year.

Therefore, the two still have a long way to go to catch up to the current leaders and we reckon they won’t do it this year. In 2015, however, it might be a completely different situation.
