BMW Global Sales in September Showed 5.3 Percent Increase

BMW continues its steady growing pace in sales this year, adding yet another impressive result to its list. The September numbers came in and they show an increase of 5.3 percent in sales, the grand total being just shy of the 200,000 mark.

Overall, the combined forces of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce accounted for 199,799 of the vehicles sold worldwide in the previous month. Compared to last year, this is marks an increase of 10,135 in pure volume.

With the September numbers, BMW can now claim the best three quarters of a year in its history, selling 1,529,880 vehicles over the first 9 months, 6.5 percent more than in 2013 (1,436,166 units).

“As in the first three quarters overall, we’ve had a record September with growth in Europe, Asia and the Americas. This increase in sales comes despite external factors continuing to influence a few individual markets,” said Ian Robertson, member of the board of management of BMW AG sales and marketing.

BMW i3 reaches 10,000 units sold

Concerns about the popularity of the i3 were forever put behind the management team, as the car just broke the 10,000 unit threshold this month. The other model in the i sub-brand, the exclusive i8, is also doing extremely well, with the waiting list being over 6 months long and 341 cars already delivered to their owners.

“BMW i can celebrate several milestones this month: more than 10,000 BMW i3s have been delivered to customers this year and 341 BMW i8 customers have received delivery of their cars since sales began in the summer,” Ian Robertson added.

BMW brand sales up 6.1 percent

The total number of cars wearing the blue and white roundel on their bonnet rose to 167,584 units last month, posting an overall increase of 6.1 percent.

The biggest seller was, as usual, the 3 Series with a growth of 3.7 percent on a year-to-date basis, 349,930 units being delivered in 2014 overall. The second place goes to the 5 Series with 278,479 units so far while the X5 completes the podium with 104,997 (a 34.7 percent increase).

MINI is slightly growing

When it comes to MINI, signs are a bit less positive. It’s true, on a worldwide scale, the brand recorded its best ever September but the drowning US sales are hitting the brand quite hard.

Overall, MINI sold 31,871 cars in September, a 1.8 percent increase compared to the same month of 2013. The goal in Oxford right now is to sell at least as many cars as last year, a target that seems attainable.

For now, BMW seems on track to achieve its ambitious goal of selling 2 million cars this year. Up until now they sold 1,529,880 units and there are three more months to go. Could they average just a little over 150,000 units sold per month? We’re guessing they will, especially with the new models coming out, like the 2 Series Active Tourer, 2 Series Convertible and X6.
