BMW is right on track, trying to break the 2 million units sold barrier this year, August proving to be yet another record breaking month in gross worldwide sales. Overall, BMW Group sales went up 4.5 percent, topping last year’s record holder.
The BMW Group sold 145,902 cars last month compared to the 139,650 units sold last year while on a year-to-date basis the grand total rose to 1,330,077 units, 6.7 percent more than in the same period of 2013. It’s also the highest record ever achieved in the company’s history over the first 8 months of a year.

“Our worldwide sales continue to grow, with August maintaining the upward trend,” said Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Sales and Marketing BMW, in Munich today. “Whilst external factors continue to influence some markets, all three major sales regions are delivering more vehicles than ever before this year and we remain confident that we will hit our target of breaking the 2 million mark in 2014.”

As for the BMW brand vehicles, the growth is even bigger. In August, demand for roundel-badged cars grew by 6.2 percent to 126,152 vehicles. On a year-to-date basis, the same number went up 9.5 percent to 1,151,904 units.

Of course, the growth driver was still the 3 Series that at the moment was sold in 305,612 units over the course of 2013. The 4 Series is now accounting for 67,375 units as well. The second best-selling car is still the 5 Series with 250,924 units delivered to customers while the podium is completed by the X3 with 103,876 units so far.

Asia was the continent with the biggest sales in August, overtaking Europe for the first time in recent history. Over the last month 51,243 units were sold over there, taking the grand total so far, this year, to 424,837 cars (including MINI). This marks a growth of 15.6 percent in demand this year. China remains the single biggest market in the world with 298,752 units delivered so far.

A slight increase was also recorded in Europe where a total of 49,219 units were sold in August, taking the grand total for 2014 up to 563,246 cars.
