Mercedes-Benz S 500 to be Assembled From CKD in India

It seems that the sexy CLA isn't the only model for which Mercedes-Benz completely underestimated the actual demand, as the all-new S-Class is “plagued” with the same low supply.
In India, for example, the 125 units of the Mercedes-Benz S 500 allocated for the entire country at the car's launch were picked up faster than hot cupcakes, despite the almost fully-loaded (Launch Edition, ed) car to fetch no less than Rs. 1.58 crore.

Since the Germans think that they could have easily sold more than 300 of the aforementioned models if supply had been enough, a new production plan has apparently been put into place.

Instead of importing the S 500, Mercedes-Benz India will assemble it locally at its plant in Chakan alongside the S 350 BlueTec, which is set to go on sale in June this year.

Featuring a slightly lower specification than the imported Mercedes-Benz S 500, the locally-assembled models will be a bit cheaper to buy as well, so India's richest won't have to dig so much in their pockets for the benefit of owning what is arguably the best car in the world.
