When Mercedes-Benz modified their SL Roadster for the US-market, they apparently went a bit stereotypical on it and now that is causing them to recall some of the models.
Apparently, certain model year 2013 SL 550, SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG roadsters manufactured between January 16, 2013, and April 30, 2013 are equipped with an occupant classification system (OCS) that “may not detect a very light person sitting in the passenger seat”.
As a consequence, if the OCS doesn't detect a very light person riding shotgun, the passenger side airbag is turned off, thus creating an increased risk of injury to the person in the event of a crash.
In other words, Mercedes-Benz modified the SL as to care more for... weight impaired passengers when sold in the United States, thus solidifying the common stereotype saying that America is a nation filled with obese people.
Bad jokes aside, it seems that a potential 130 units of the aforementioned models may be affected, so if you're one of the owners you might want to contact Mercedes-Benz USA at 1-201-573-0600.
