The Audi TT made its international debut some time ago, with the Ingolstadt manufacturer having enough time to launch the TT and TTS Roadster version in the process.
But Mercedes-Benz is lurking in the shadows, trying to come up with a coupé competitor for the Audi TT. At least that's what Autocar says, claiming Mercedes is looking to build an entry-level coupé that will succeed the three-door A-Class in 2019.

Besides the Audi TT, Mercedes-Benz will also have to face the eternal Bavarian rivals from BMW and their 2 Series, but they have the second-generation MFA platform on their side.

The same source claims such a model is currently at drawing board level, but if Mercedes will eventually launch such a car, Stuttgart will take proper care of it. In other words, besides a standard down-to-Earth version, engineers could provide a 2.0-liter turbo AMG powerplant under the new coupé's hood.

If, and only if, the production process receives the green light from Stuttgart officials, we should expect a lot of styling cues taken from the AMG GT, shrunken and adapted to fit a 2+2 layout vehicle.

Taking after the TT, Mercedes-Benz's car will use a transversely mounted engine and will be available with standard front-wheel drive or with the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

Coincidence or not, Mercedes-Benz are also rumored to come up with a model that will toughen the competition for the Audi A7 and Porsche Panamera, touted as the GT4. Design-wise, it could be a combination between the CLS and the AMG GT, but just like the upcoming entry-level coupé, its future is not yet carved in stone.
