Mercedes-Benz Green Lineup to Explode in the Near Future

Even though the tri-star brand already has the largest lineup of zero-emission car models on the automotive market, the Swabians from Mercedes-Benz aren't going to stop here.

Beside the nine existing emission-free models which use either battery or fuel cell power, at least a dozen series-production tree-hugging cars are in the launch barrel to be on the market by 2020.

With increasing pressure from BMW's future i-series and Audi's “tron” future lineups, Mercedes doesn't want to stand still in this (currently) small niche of vehicles.

Obviously, the main charge (pun intended) will consist of hybrids, both in their classic and plug-in variants, especially since Daimler has developed a “hybridization package” that can be scaled to fit quite a large number of petrol and diesel engines covering their entire range of cars.

According to Stuttgart insiders, in the next five years we will see at least two hybrid-engined variants of every single model in their ever expanding lineup. Although the market for full-electric cars is still in its infancy, it should follow a steeper curve than the hybrids, which in recent years have started to almost become common even on European roads.

Mercedes-Benz and smart are already kings in terms of zero-emission car sales on their home turf, since in Germany they account for more than 40% of sales, a figure which they plan on having in every market they're present on.
