Even though it was technically the inventor of a niche within a niche, the BMW X6 has become in just a few years one the best-selling crossovers in the sporty SUV market. As a direct consequence almost all other premium manufacturers are now trying to emulate its success with “five-door crossover coupes” of their own.
Acura didn't fare so well with the rather unsightly ZDX, but that didn't stop BMW's main competitors, Mercedes-Benz, who have already approved a coupeish 2015 MY version of the M-Class, dubbed by insiders to be called the MLC and built at the American Tuscaloosa plant, in Alabama.
The crossover-coupe craze doesn't stop here, apparently, if a recent report made by the Germans from Autobild is to be believed. According to them, the three-pointed star will also launch a sportier-looking version of the fullsize GL as well, to be dubbed the GLC.
This piece of news should be taken with a pinch of salt, though, as the car's main competitors aren't even approved for production. We are talking about a presumable X8, “SAC” version of the not-yet confirmed BMW X7 and a Q8 version of the second generation of the Audi Q7 – a car that hasn't been launched yet.
If the aforementioned cars do make an official appearance in the following years on the market, expect to be flooded by spyshots and leaked info about the Mercedes-Benz GLC as well.
Until that time comes, the MLC will be the first true X6 competitor from Stuttgart, a concept previewing the production version slated to be launched either at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September of this year or at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
