Technically-speaking, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class no longer has any direct competitors, while the G 63 AMG version was actually born without enemies.
This doesn't stop media outlets all around the world to try and pit against the next best thing from the stables of various manufacturers, with Land Rover being the most customary.

The folks at Road and Track also jumped on the G 63 AMG versus the world bandwagon last autumn, but they kept the resulting article on ice until yesterday.

In their comparison, they pitted the AMG Gelandewagen against what many see as the closest thing to a competitor, the Range Rover Supercharged.

With both cars using huge V8 engines with over 500 horsepower at their disposal and having the off-road credentials of an army tank, the Road and Track editors took them up a ski slope in the Adirondack Mountains.

Since their adventure took place in early autumn, there wasn't any snow involved, but this doesn't mean that the two go-anywhere vehicles weren't put through the fires of Gehenna until they reached the top of the mountain.
