One of the first questions I asked my driving instructor once speech returned after the first outing into traffic was "what happens when two cars from opposing outside lanes want to join the middle one at the same time?"
I won't bother you with his answer because it was wrong and poorly explained, but I will tell you what I have come to believe over the years: it's a case of first come, first served mixed with a dash of common sense. And by that I mean that in most cases, the car that's in front should be allowed to move in, considering the other driver has a much better view of the whole situation.

The situation below is a little more difficult to judge. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class on the left-most lane was actually in front when it first started the maneuver, and it should also get extra points for actually using its blinker. The red Volkswagen Passat on the right surely did not see the Merc's signal, so after passing in front of the more expensive car, it started drifting into the middle lane as well. Surprisingly, this driver also used the blinker.

The normal course of action here would have seen the Mercedes-Benz slow down and allow the Passat to go in front, but for some reason, it doesn't. The Volkswagen notices the lane was occupied in the meantime and looks like it wants to pull back. Then, its driver has a burst of ego and starts bullying the Mercedes to let it in this highly-coveted middle lane.

The two roll side by side for a while, presumably exchanging a few words, after which the Mercedes-Benz tries to retake what the driver must have considered its rightful place. Finally, the Passat give in, probably thinking it would be the end of it.

At this point, taking sides becomes almost impossible. What you actually wish is for the crane's hook to become loose and smash both of their cars into pieces. Instead, the Mercedes driver casually walks out, inserts his hand in the other car and gives everyone inside a dose of pepper spray that could season enough salads to last a lifetime. Surprisingly, those in the red Volkswagen don't immediately run out for air. I guess Russians don't just like their food spicy, but also their road rage.
