Mercedes didn't hit a home run with the GLE 43, but it was popular due to its AMG body kit and the cred that gave it. Now Mercedes is looking to do one better with the GLE 53 which has been spied in "coupe' form for the first time.
The GLE Coupe hasn't come out yet, but we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect from a design perspective. And even though this is labeled as an AMG model, the bodywork isn't as full or low as it would be for the 63 version.
Just like its sedan or 2-door counterparts from the E-Class family, the GLE 53 Coupe should be powered by the first hybrid AMG powertrain, a twin-turbo inline-6 with help from the so-called EQ Boost setup which fills in the torque gaps. For the American market, the output should be rated at the same 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet (520 Newton-meters), going through a 9-speed automatic to all four wheels.
That's about 44 horsepower more than the outgoing GLE 43. But we can't get too excited because while the EQ Boost system can fill in the torque gaps with its 22 HP and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm), it also adds a lot of extra weight. For example, the new CLS 53 is 115 KG heavier than the CLS 450 with which it shares the base 3-liter engine.
That won't stop people from buying one, as the AMG body kit is accompanied by fancy wheels, brakes and a sports exhaust with quad tailpipes. It won't sound like any hybrid you know.
The interior should be carried over from the standard GLE, minus the headroom. We are a little disappointed with the fact that it doesn't have frameless doors like the Audi Q8. But the double 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system will more than compensate for this. Hopefully, the MBUX will be matched up with some killer AMG graphics.
