Before Scion was killed off, before even the Toyobaru project, Scion was known for something else: boxy-looking Japanese compacts for students on a budget. And some of those students liked to mess around with the suspension, lowering their cubes onto drift or rally-themed wheels.
They might look super-weird now, but the design of the brick-shaped lower-riders is coming back from the unlikeliest of sources: Mercedes-AMG. As you're probably aware, the brand just launched a new crossover called the GLB-Class. It's the source of the "baby G-Class" rumors of old, and while some of its corners are rounded off, it's still not child-friendly.

That's the basic GLB, but two AMG models are getting ready to bomb down your local backroad using the power of their mighty 2-liter turbo engines. The GLB 35 has already been revealed, but not launched, while the GLB 45/45 S has a little while to go before it's ready. And you know what a hot car needs besides power? That's right, lowered suspension.

We have both types of prototype in this, our latest spy video from the Nurburgring. It's shot from a higher angle, making both the GLB 35 and the GLB 45 look extra-boxy. By now, you should know all about these two, but in case you don't, the cheaper and less powerful of the two is a 306 HP model while the hardcore 45 S boasts 421 HP for acceleration that would even scare some supercars.

And while your average Scion cost about $20,000, the German big boys might go to four times that with options like the aero appearance package or extra-spicy carbon fiber trim. The performance of the GLB 45 should be almost unrivaled in its segment and beyond, perhaps with the exception of the new RS Q3 that's on the cusp of being revealed.
