The first day of the pre-season testing program at the Circuito de Jerez was not exactly trouble free for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, with Lewis Hamilton crashing the new W05 single-seater because of a front wing failure.
Arguably the prettiest F1 car in 2014, the Mercedes-AMG F1 W05 was the first to emerge from the paddock for a run at precisely 09:00 AM CET, with which Lewis promptly set out the fastest time of the day.

Unfortunately, after just 18 laps, a front wing failure on the long straight had the Brit lose control of the car, which then crashed going into Turn One. Hamilton emerged from the car without a single scratch.

Lewis Hamilton: “For me it’s an incredibly positive start to be the first car out on track and completing a good number of laps. Other teams have been going out for single-lap runs, starting a few hours after we had first hit the track, so to have started running through our test program was very encouraging. The car feels quite good, especially considering it’s so early in our program, so overall it’s been a positive day. Of course, it’s unfortunate to end the day early when everyone has worked so hard and we had looked like easily completing the most mileage of anyone here today, but we’ll make that track time back and it’s better to have these things happen now than in Melbourne. I’m really proud of the team for what they’ve achieved in getting us here and we’ll keep pushing.”
