The days when new cars were announced using only a single press release are long gone. McLaren has finally decided to full reveal the P1 supercar today, but we already know almost everything about it from their endless teasers and announcements.
The list of things we already knew and were 'revealed' today includes the output of 916 PS and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) in total, combining the efforts of a 737 PS 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor that has more power than your family car: 179 HP (132 kW) and 192 lb-ft (260 Nm).
What we didn't know is that this hybrid combo is mated to a seven-speed Graziano gearbox, and that the McLaren can double as an EV, traveling for up to 20 km (12.4 miles) on battery juice alone provided you don't go over 48 km/h (30 mph).
Everything about the P1 might feel underwhelming and normal unless you press the little red button on the steering wheel, which says "IPAS". This is short for for Instant Power Assist System and means you get from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than three seconds, while 0-200 km/h (124 mph) takes under seven seconds. It takes 17 seconds to reach a speed your normal automobile will never reach, 300 km/h, and the fun only stops at 350 km/h (217 mph).
Our more careful readers will have noticed that there's another button on the other side of the wheel marked DRS – Drag Reduction System. This lowers the rear wing and makes the P1 as slippery as a fish. It's basically like the system used by F1 cars on straights.
There's only one other big number on the P1 that matters, and that's the price. Only 375 cars will be built, and each will demand GBP 866,000 or the equivalent of $1,150,000. That's before tax… and transportation, and fuel, and registration, and options. It's a special breed, this P1.
