McLaren Confirm KERS for Hungary

Following their obvious mastering of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System in recent weeks, McLaren today confirmed that they will continue to use the unit at the Hungaroring also. Mercedes motorsport director Norbert Haug argued the team's decision to keep developing the unit for the Hungarian Grand Prix with the circuit's long start/finish straight line.

(At the Hungaroring) there is a quite long run from the start to the first corner, and a long straight. It is a great KERS track,” Haug was quoted as saying to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, as reported by the GMM news agency.

The benefits of KERS have been quite obvious at the Nurburgring last weekend, at least if we are to look at Lewis Hamilton's shotgun start on Sunday. The Brit, whose car was powered by McLaren's improved unit, jumped from 5th to 1st in a matter of seconds, and only bad luck (puncture) and a slight bump from Mark Webber's RB5 caused Ham to see his race ruined after only one lap.

The Woking based team will again use KERS on back-to-back grands prix this year, after they had previously renounced the unit for the British Grand Prix last month.

As expected, McLaren will not be the only team using KERS in Hungary, as they will be joined by Maranello based Ferrari. The prancing horse has used the technology during all racing weekends this year but one, in Bahrain, when only Massa benefited from its power boost.

The two teams' decision to keep developing the unit is curious to say the least, as the FOTA has already voted for a complete scrap of the technology in 2010. The other 3 teams that have developed in-house KERS units for 2009 – BMW, Renault and Williams – have already given up on the idea of developing them furthermore.
