One year after introducing the carbon fiber MP4-12C to the world, McLaren gives us the open top version of the supercar, the 12C Spider, with the carmaker releasing a set of bold press photos for the vehicle.
The vehicle was design as a convertible from the very beginning, so the car required no strengthening to lose its top. However, the car does gain 40 kg (lbs) due to the folding hard top mechanism, which needs 17 seconds to hide this behind the passenger cell, an operation that can be performed at speeds of up to 19 mph (30 km/h). In addition to that, the carmaker introduced a power rear windscreen, which can be sent to bed or erected at the touch of a button. The carmaker also gifted the car with a glass engine cover and developed new wheels for the Spider.

The Spider is identical to the Coupe in terms of tech goodies, which means we get the same specs as those of the recently-facelifted coupe. Thus, the center of the car is occupied by a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 with 625 hp, which works with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to send the power to the rear wheels.

Imagine an MP4-12 coupe and a Spider placed next to each other at a set of lights. The two rev their engines and, when green shows up, they surge forwards. Both hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.1 seconds, while the Spider falls 0.1 seconds behind in the 0 to 100 mph (161 km/h) sprint.

In the 0 to 124 mph (200 km/h) sprint, the Coupe gains 0.2 seconds, as the Spider needs 9s to deal with this. As for the top speed, the MP4-12C coupe can hit 207 mph (333 km/h), while the Spider goes up to 204 mph (329 km/h). The CO2 emissions are identical and so is the fuel efficiency, which sits at 11.7 liters per 100 km (20.1 US mpg).

The 12C Spider incorporates McLaren’s Roll Over Protection System, which means that each buttress includes a steel structure that can absorb impact energy. Being a 2013 model, the car also gets new interior trimming, as well as a Vehicle Lift function, which raises the front axle by up to 1.6 inches (40 mm) and the rear one by up to 1 inch (25 mm) to allow the car to tackle speed bumps, with this being active up to 37 mph (60 km/h).
