Mazda6 Reaches 2M Units Production Milestone

Mazda announced that the cumulative global production volume of the Mazda6, which is marketed as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, has reached two million units at the end of last month.

The vehicle reached this milestone after eight years and six months of production. The first generation Mazda6 started rolling off the lines at Mazda’s Hofu Plant No. 2, which is located in the Yamaguchi prefecture, in February 2002.

The achievement marks the second fastest time (the Mazda3 takes the first place) to produce two million units of one model since the company introduced its new generation Zoom-Zoom product range in 2002.

The Mazda6 received a new generation in 2007, following Mazda’s “Zoom-Zoom evolution” concept.

The vehicle is currently produced at Mazda's Hofu Plant No. 2 in Japan, at AutoAlliance International Inc. (AAI) in Michigan, USA, and at the FAW Car Co., Ltd. (FCC) facility in Changchun, Jilin province, China. The global production of the car during the January-August 2010 period was steady at approximately 164,000 units, a figure that can be translated into an increase of almost 50 percent over the same period of last year.

"The Mazda6 is one of the core models which helped establish Mazda's brand image globally. I was the first generation model's development program manager, and I still have a special fondness for this terrific car. I'm grateful to the two million-plus customers around the world who have purchased a Mazda6. I would like to say thank you to each and every customer," said Seita Kanai, Mazda's senior managing executive officer in charge of R&D and Program Management.
