Mazda CX-5 Compact SUV Coming

Mazda is planing to expand its SUV range, offering a new entry level model. The Japanese automotive producer will offer a compact SUV by the end of next year, with the vehicles using the CX-5 name, as autocar reports.

Senior Mazda sources have told the aforementioned publication that the company is currently working on the project.

The upcoming vehicle might borrow some of the design features used by the 2007 Hakaze Concept. But the big innovation is expected to be found under the bonnet of the SUV, as it will be the first production Mazda to be powered by the new generation of high-efficiency Sky engines.

The Sky powerplants feature innovative engineering solutions, such as low-friction blocks and direct injection. Mazda plans to use the units in conjunction with i-stop (the company’s special stop-start system) and a braking energy regeneration system. Mazda also plans to make its future vehicles lighter. The company’s final aim is to offer a 30 percent cut for fuel consumption

Mazda has set itself the target to release a compact SUV that tips the scales 100 kg lower than its competitors, in order to maximize the efficiency potential of the Sky engines.

The CX-5 will join Mazda’s current SUV models, the CX-7 and the CX-9. Both the CX-7 and the CX-9 are only available with petrol units. The first can be ordered with a 244 hp 2.3 liter turbocharged unit or with a 161 hp naturally aspirated powerplant, while the second only comes with a 268 hp 3.7 liter V6.
