While the tie-up between Mazda and Alfa Romeo may have seemed a bit strange at first, we have come to the conclusion that it would be very beneficial for both companies. Their first order of business is to bring out the all-new Mazda MX-5, which will be a sister-car for the upcoming rear-wheel driven Alfa Romeo Spyder - a car we are extremely eagerly awaiting.
Now, further details have emerged about what seems to be a very fruitful relationship between the two companies. According to Mazda CEO Takashi Yamanouchi, says that the upcoming roadsters will be very different, at least in terms of styling and engine options - only Mazda-badged cars will get SKYACTIV technology under the bonnet.

Yamanouchi goes on to say that “We want to achieve success with the MX-5 and Spyder project first [. . .] We can learn more about each other and see what opportunities exist.” He also stated that the Wankel rotary engine is still a very promising deal for Mazda, despite the fact that the last car to be powered by the legendary unit was phased out in June.

Mazda will, however, launch a range-extended car in Japan, next year, which will get a rotary engine as a range extender - again, a very exciting prospect.
