Before the Diablo came along, the Countach entered the scene with wedge styling from none other than the man behind the Lancia Stratos. Lamborghini kept the Countach in production for 16 long years, and of the 1,983 ever produced, this LP 5000 S was purchased new by Mario Andretti.
Delivered in 1984, the LP 5000 S is one of 321 units produced by the Raging Bull of Sant’Agata Bolognese. Don’t let the nomenclature fool you because the engine in this model is a 4.8-liter instead of the 5.2-liter in the LP 5000 Quattrovalvole. With 371 horsepower on tap, the Countach is a far cry from the supercars we have these days, let alone the Aventador S and Huracan Evo.
Motorcar Gallery is selling the ex-Andretti redhead for $499,000, and that’s a good deal if you take a look at the condition of the vehicle. The odometer shows 17,715 kilometers but the paintwork, tan upholstery, pinstripe with the Mario Andretti Logo, embellished side mirrors are in top condition.
As part of a major mechanical refurbishment, the LP 5000 S had its engine pulled out for an extensive overhaul. “Any work needed was addressed” according to Motorcar Gallery, but the dealership doesn’t go into detail. On the other hand, who could say no to such a marvelous time capsule?
The nostalgia kicks in harder if you remember that Andretti won in Formula 1, NASCAR, endurance racing, and the Indianapolis 500. He’s now 79 years old but his legacy lives on in mediums you wouldn’t imagine possible. Famous rapper Ice Cube, the boys from A Tribe Called Quest, and even House Of Pain mention the Italo-American racing driver in their songs.
Searching for other Lamborghini Countach models on the duPont Registry returns varied results, including an LP 5000 S with 58,673 miles on the clock for $389,500. A 25th Anniversary is the cheapest Countach listed at $249,500, but this variant of the breed plays second fiddle to the cleaner lines of the LP 5000 S.
