When I think about the Buick Skylark, I think about a nameplate capable of adapting to passing trends throughout multiple generations. Even as the U.S. grappled with fuel shortages and environmental issues, the Skylark embraced change and shifted towards efficiency without sacrificing style.
In fact, one could argue that few Buicks have ever looked as nice as those early 70s Skylarks in Coupe form. I’m particularly fond of the Sun Coupe package, a limited production offering that featured a giant canvas sunroof. These are some of the rarest American classics out there, and they normally don’t come cheap.

The one you’re looking at now is, for lack of a better term, really freaking nice. It’s been thoroughly refurbished, and up until recently, it was up for grabs to the highest bidder at auction. However, the seller’s prayers went unanswered, and the reserve wasn’t met. In fact, the highest anybody would bid was $36,250, which is considerably less than what its current owner paid for it just less than three years ago - $54,000.

Maybe you could argue that it’s not worth $54k today, but it’s definitely worth more than $36k, so the listing getting pulled comes as little surprise. I could see this going for $40,000 easy, if not $45,000.

Let’s look at everything this Buick has going for it, starting with the exterior. The red paint job blends well together with the white vinyl roof and those white pinstripes that hug the shoulder line before curving toward the rear pillar.

Additional highlights include the previously mentioned sliding sunroof, the GS Stage 2-style hood and emblems, Sun Coupe badging, chrome bumpers, and staggered-width 18” US Mag Rambler wheels with Buick center caps and BFGoodrich tires.

This upgraded Skylark also comes with TA Performance four-wheel disc brakes, and custom sway bars, springs, and bushings. As for why it needs an upgraded suspension, that would be because of the horsepower, but we’ll get to that in a second.

The interior, meanwhile, features white leather upholstery for the front and rear bench seats, matching door panels, air conditioning, a Hurst shifter, power windows, a custom stereo with aftermarket speakers, plus a three-spoke steering wheel mounted on a tilting column.

As for the power unit, it’s a 455 ci V8 that’s been fitted with aluminum cylinder heads, a custom electronic fuel injection system, custom serpentine system, long-tube headers, an aluminum radiator with dual electric cooling fans, and another few extra bits. According to the seller, around 500 horsepower gets sent to the rear wheels via a Tremec five-speed manual gearbox, while the dual-outlet exhaust with its Thrush Turbo mufflers takes care of the “vocals”.

How much do you think this car is worth? Objectively speaking. Yes, I know that technically it’s worth whatever people are willing to pay, but the fact that it sold for $54,000 less than three years ago is worth considering.

We’ve also seen similar Skylark Sun Coupe models that have sold for even more – take this Fire Red example (a restomod that was also powered by a 455 ci V8) that exchanged hands for $61,950 back in March of 2021. Heck of a sweet ride!
