Local Motors Unveils Livery for Maserati Trofeo Racecar

With the Maserati Trofeo series making its only stop in the U.S. this weekend, Local Motors has announced that it has signed on to be primary sponsor for one of the cars. Taggart Autosport revealed the basic paint scheme it will run this weekend when its two drivers tackled Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in a spec Maserati GranTurismo MC.

Like many single-make racing series, Maserati Trofeo is organized by Maserati, and it features a field of identical racecars with amateur or semi-professional drivers. In the case of Taggart Autosport entry, it will be the latter. This team generally runs a Porsche 911 GT3 R in the Pirelli World Challenge Championships, but Jim Taggart (team owner) will trade in his Porsche keys for some track time in a Maserati with co-driver Tom Long.

Although neither driver is a regular in the Maserati Trofeo series, both are highly versed at the challenging VIR track with both men having “thousands of laps” around the 17-turn road course. The four-day race weekend for the fifth round of Maserati Trofeo kicks off this Thursday with practice sessions last through Friday and endurance races taking place Saturday and Sunday.

We are proud to partner with Taggart Autosport in the only US-based Maserati Tropheo series race. Many road racers and their fans are attracted to the Rally Fighter because of the off-road styling paired with the on-road handling. Plus it’s one of the few ways a driver can experience building their own one-of-a-kind off- and on-road vehicle,” said Patrick Morgan, director of anchor product sales for Local Motors.

As for the relationship between Local Motors and Taggart Autosport, the crowdsourced builder of all things awesome was commissioned to build a Rally Fighter for the race team earlier this year. In addition to the Rally Fighter, Local Motors is currently working on the development of a 3D-printed electric vehicle, which will be unveiled next month at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago.
