One of the most iconic off-roaders in the world, the Land Rover Defender, is getting ready for a major reboot next week at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The Brits promise to unveil a car with “transformational breadth of capability,” and you can watch the entire event live right here.
On Wednesday, September 10, at 9:00 BST (8:00 GMT), the new Defender is set to start redefining the “adventure for the 21st century” in front of both a live audience in Frankfurt, and people watching online.
The car will travel to the event on all four wheels, having started this week a 6,400 km trip (4,000 miles) in the Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan, heading for Germany. This drive is needed, Land Rover says, to “test the new vehicle’s capability and durability as it crosses one of the world’s most landlocked locations.”
The new Defender has already been through a rigorous testing program, having clocked 1.2 million km (745,000 miles) on various roads and tracks across the world.
There are no official details on the SUV for now, but the rumor mill has spun fast enough to give us a vague idea of what the new Defender will be all about.
As usual, the SUV will come as standard with all-wheel-drive and an automatic transmission, linked to a range of engines that include six- and four-cylinder units. Mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants are also on the table.
For now we know of at least two versions of the Defender, set apart by the size of the wheelbase: 90 and 110. Both will likely get a massive leap in technology.
The prototypes already spied on the Nurburgring, for instance, show signs of being equipped with cameras and sensors for the different driver assistance systems.
All the details on the Defender will be unveiled on September 10, so mark the date and get ready to watch the event unfold in the video section attached below.
