There are many other fuels we can use to power our future, with hydrogen being the one Toyota chose to research.
Of course, you can have biodiesel made out of seeds oil, solar energy, or ethanol made from corn and even algae but hydrogen seems the most convenient one, due to its abundance in nature as well as its zero carbon leftovers after use.
Lexus’ current hybrid drive system was designed to combine the two fuel sources (gasoline / electric) in the most efficient way to move around its vehicles. The two sources complete each other seamlessly while also giving you the possibility to run only on electricity for short distances.
