It looks like the two-horse battle between BMW and Mercedes just got a third surprise rival that overtook both of them in August sales. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, Lexus sold more cars than both BMW and Mercedes over the course of the last month, climbing to the top spot in terms of sales.
This took both German companies by surprise, and we’re now dealing with a situation few people anticipated. In pure numbers, the Toyota-owned brand sold 33,487 units in the US last month while Mercedes came second with 28,373 units and BMW third with 27,775.

In percentages, Lexus sales went up by 2.1 percent compared to the same month of 2014, Mercedes-Benz gained 4.8 percent while BMW was on the rise but for only 2 percent flat.

The best sellers were the NX SUV, which is going through a rather good period at the moment, selling 4,448 units over the course of just four weeks. What was even more impressive was the gain BMW’s 3 Series recorded, with a spike of no less than 23 percent in demand for the facelift model.

As for the bestselling model with the three-pointed star on the bonnet, Mercedes posted an even more impressive hike in demand for the C-Class, sales increasing by 39 percent in August compared to the same month of 2014.

On a year-to-date basis, BMW is still on the number one spot, with an increase over the course of 2015 so far of 5.9 percent that adds up to a total for the 8 months that already passed of 223,348 cars delivered.

The number two spot, however, now goes to Lexus with a growth of 12 percent so far and a grand total of 222,151 units. Mercedes comes in third at 220,870 with a year-to-date increase of 7.3 percent.

But wait, where’s Audi?

Contrary to what you might be inclined to believe, the traditional rival of the two German premium manufacturers mentioned here, Audi doesn’t do all that well in the States. As a matter of fact, it hasn’t been in the top three premium car makers in terms of sales in the US since it started being imported there.

Audi is however on a distinct positive trend, proof being the fact that August was its 56th consecutive month in which the company recorded an increase in sales. They are still far off from the pole with 18,794 units sold in the previous month and 130,063 in total for 2015 so far but with its entry-level offering in the shape of the A3 Sedan, the four-ringed manufacturer is seeing better days than ever.
